Revive Our Gulf is working to restore kūtai (green-lipped mussel) reefs across Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui-ā-Toi, the Hauraki Gulf.

Once covering vast areas of the seafloor, these soft-sediment kūtai reefs formed extensive, living reef systems across the inner Gulf. These reefs were removed through historical dredging and have not recovered naturally. Their loss has had profound impacts on water quality, biodiversity, and the overall health of the Gulf.

Today, much of the seafloor is degraded and no longer in a condition that can easily support reef systems. Our work focuses on rebuilding these ecosystems carefully, collaboratively, and over the long term – so they can once again sustain themselves.

Our Vision

Abundance & biodiversity returned. Mauri ora!

Our vision is a Hauraki Gulf, enhanced with restored seabed mussel reefs, healthy ecosystems, and a natural biodiversity of marine life.

Our Mission

Re-musseling the Gulf. Together.

Re-musseling the Gulf involves working in partnership with iwi, hapu, whānau and community to restore the mussel reefs of the Hauraki Gulf.

Our History

Our Funding Community

This work is made possible by a community of people and organisations who choose to back it.

Their support enables us to continue the careful, long-term work of learning how to restore kūtai reefs, and to build the foundations for restoration at scale across the Gulf.

We acknowledge and thank the organisations and individuals who support this work.
